Homemade Calf Block

November 11th, 2009

I’ve been unable to get any real burn out of my calves when doing raises on a level surface. The only solution? Use a calf block.

But I certainly wasn’t going to drive to the fitness store and pay money for one. So I grabbed a big chunk of pressure treated lumber and two pieces of 2×2. Drilled pilot holes, fastened the 2×2s down with wood screws and voilĂ ! A DIY calf block. Total cost: zero dollars, zero cents (all supplies were leftovers or scrap pieces). Duration of project: 10 minutes.

I could have extended the 2×2 balance arms a bit further but that would have made the unit harder to store. Then length they are now poses me no problems and is more stable than I had anticipated. The construction is completely amateur but it’s solid and took no time at all.

This is a quick-and-dirty rehash of Rob Brewer’s design, which I found online a while ago. If you want to make something similar, his build looks much sturdier and is probably the best one to duplicate.
